The government's solar targets for 2025, if met, would cater to the entire country's power demands.
That's according to the Minister for Climate and Environment, Eamon Ryan who believes available roofspace is an opportunity for solar use.
A plan goes before cabinet on Tuesday to remove the VAT from the cost of solar panels to make the technology more accessible.
The Green Party Leader, says a switch to solar could solve our reliance on fossil fuels:
"We set a target in the next three years to deliver five gigawatts of solar. Now that's if that was at full capacity and never is and if the capacity factor is lower anyway, but that's roughly the size of the power demand as we're speaking at the moment in the country so and it's as much renewables as we built over the last 20. That's what we need to do on solar alone as well as an offshore wind and onshore wind."
