Addicts and those with mental health issues may no longer face prosecution if they are found in possession of certain drugs.

Frank Feighan, who is the Minister responsible for drugs strategy, is supporting suggestions that laws which allow Gardaí to issue cautions for possession of small amounts of cannabis, be expanded to include other drugs like cocaine and ecstasy.

The Minister's told the Irish Independent that it would be aligned with Government strategy which supports a health-led approach to drugs.
