A Sligo councillor says elderly people in his area are concerned for their safety after a burglary which left a man in his 70's fighting for his life.
Gardai have renewed their appeal for information after 73 year old Thomas Niland was seriously assaulted in his home in Skreen on the 18th of January.
He suffered serious head and upper body injuries after three men broke into his home and stole a sum of cash.
Independent Councillor Michael Clarke says many in the local community are shocked and worried:
"This was a strong man, a capable man of looking after himself had a good type life and a huge long life ahead of him.
"And for this to happen him is terrible.
"And it sends shockwaves throughout the community here, people that are living alone in towns and villages and in rural areas today are in shock and very concern for all safety
