Gardai have launched a campaign to prevent shoppers and businesses falling victim to online fraud in the lead up to Christmas.

Shoppers are being urged to ensure the website is authentic and to check the spelling and URL address are genuine.

While online retailers are being encouraged to ensure their system of payment and delivery are reputable and secure, if they're being outsourced.

Gardai are also urging people not to send their card details by email, text or any other messaging method.

Dermott Jewell, Policy Advisor with the Consumers' Association of Ireland, says shoppers should research the business address and location given on a retailer's website.

"Try to look at address and locations so you know who you're dealing with at any given time.

"Never accept an offer to pay money directly to an individual or to some payment system outside of the norm."
