The head of the the National Roads Policing Bureau says new 'camera-based' technology is being considered.
1 in 10 drivers admitted to using mobile apps while driving, according to a recent survey by the Road Safety Authority
Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council, Noel Gibbons, says similar technology is currently being tested by authorities in Australia:
"It's already being used in Australia, in Queensland, where they've introduced this technology in the last month, where they have a trial period for three months, where they uses this technology to detect drivers who are on their mobile phone, and also drivers who are not wearing their seatbelts. So they're given a three month grace period in Australia where they will be issued with warnings, and from then on, they will receive fines."
