A former consultant obstetrician believes changes to abortion laws in Ireland are "sensible".

It follows a major review of the current legislation.

The report - which has yet to be published - will be presented to Cabinet by the Health Minister on Tuesday.

Its recommendations include making the three-day waiting period before an abortion "optional".

Dr Peter Boylan says removing the criminal element from the legislation is crucial:

"The criminalization of doctors should stop. It's the only medical procedure in the country in which if you got it wrong, you're subjected to criminal sanction. All other ones are not criminal. And I think there are problems around the termination for foetal abnormalities".
