Sean Fitzpatrick or Seany, as he was known to his family and friends, became well known for his controversial role in the rapid expansion and then collapse of Anglo Irish bank.

He took over chief executive in 1986 when the bank was relatively small, the bank grew to become the third largest in the country.

The rise of Anglo coincided with the explosion of the Celtic Tiger and a property bubble that subsequently spectacularly burst.

The bank was guaranteed in 2008 and Sean Fitzpatrick stood down later that year.

It eventually became Irish bank resolution Corporation, which is still being wound down to this day.

Sean Fitzpatrick went on trial in 2014 and again in 2016, on charges of financial irregularities, but was acquitted on both occasions.

He passed away yesterday at the age of 73 from cardiac arrest and is survived by his wife and three children.
