Fine Gael senator John McGahon has been found not guilty of assaulting a man outside a bar and nightclub in Dundalk, Co Louth, almost four years ago.
The 31-year-old of Faughart Gardens, St Patrick's Terrace, Dundalk, had pleaded not guilty at Dundalk Circuit Court to a charge of assaulting Breen White causing him harm on Park Street, Dundalk on June 16th, 2018, and claimed that he was acting in self-defence.
The jury of four men and seven women retired to begin considering their verdict yesterday afternoon but deliberations were then suspended yesterday evening.
Judge Dara Hayes told the jurors this morning they could return a majority verdict after they failed to reach a unanimous decision.
The jury returned a not guilty verdict at around 3.30pm this afternoon.
