Congestion charges will not work in Ireland, due to the poor quality of the public transport system.

Transport commentator, Conor Faughnan says cities - in which congestion fees are successful - have good quality public transport.

Charges have previously been discussed by government, but last week, the Taoiseach said they will not be introduced.

Mr. Faughnan says if the objectives of the charges are to be achieved, it's too early to implement them:

"We simply cannot impose congestion charges at this point, at least not if we want them to achieve their objectives. The cities where they work are cities that are marked by comprehensive good quality public transport. And that is an absolutely essential part of the system, if you've going to contemplate congestion charges".
