Farmers encouraged to make changes to deal with heatwaves

A switch to a more heifer-based system is one way that farmers can deal with heatwaves in the future.

That's according to a farming expert as Ireland prepares for temperatures to hit 29 degrees at times this week.

The spike in the mercury is concerning many in the farming industry, as the hot weather causes damage to soil conditions.

Declan Marren from the Irish Farmers Journal says a dairy or beef system could benefit farmers in the West, where the soil is poorest.
