Families whose children received inappropriate mental health care in south Kerry could launch legal action as soon as next month.

A review has found "significant harm" to 46 children due to the medication prescribed by a junior doctor.

The head of the HSE says affected families shouldn't have to go through the courts to get compensation.

Keith Rolls, solicitor at Coleman Legal which represents over 100 families, says they plan to launch legal proceedings shortly:

"We've reached out to the HSE and CAMHS on two occasions now, to seek meetings with CAMHS and the HSE team to see what they feel is appropriate for our clients. We haven't heard back from either party yet so it's our objectives and prerogative to issue proceedings on behalf of our clients. We'll be issuing High Court proceedings and serving them on the HSE. We'd hope to be issuing our first set of proceedings, I would say, in the next month."
