European Central Bank increases interest rates for the seventh time in a year

They are going up by a quarter of one per cent , as the ECB continues its attempts to reduce Eurozone inflation.

It says the outlook for inflation continues to be too high for too long.

President of the ECB Christine Lagarde's indicated more interest rate rises are on the way:

"...we are not pausing and under present circumstances and based on what we have; which is the baseline of March. We know that we have more ground to cover."

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach says the Government is considering introducing a measure in the next Budget, to help mortgage holders facing another interest rate hike:

"Any decision on reintroducing mortgage interest relief would have to be considered as part of the Budget in October, so it is something we will consider, but I do need to be frank with people- the tax package can only be so big."
