Environment Minister in Brussels for emergency meeting on rising cost of energy

The Environment Minister is in Brussels for an emergency meeting on the rising cost of energy.

Eamon Ryan is meeting with his EU counterparts to come up with ways to deal with the high cost of gas and electricity since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The emergency summit will also discuss was to reduce energy use at peak times in an effort to avoid blackouts this winter.

Minister Eamon Ryan, says energy companies should be giving some of their profits to EU member states:

"The measures the Commission have recommended, is taking some of those excess profits and recycling them back into the households make sense and electricity in gas and also in really pushing energy efficiency and flattening the curve in that peak time reducing demand and that way reducing the price and helping households they're practical. They're deliverable. They're not the full solution. But they will help."
