Some employers are trying to avoid the new pension auto-enrolment system by forcing employees to join less favourable schemes.

The pension auto-enrolment scheme starts on January first and is designed to help more than 800 thousand workers begin saving for their retirement.

The Government is being forced to bring in emergency regulations to stop companies attempting to subvert the new scheme.

Charlie Weston, Personal Finance editor with the Irish Independent, says some employers are offering only 1 per cent in contributions:

"What some of them are trying to do is get around this by signing staff up to an inferior in house pension scheme, typically it'll have contributions of 1% this is typical now, contributions of just 1% being made by the employer and nothing being made by the employee"
