The Education Minister is due before an Oireachtas committee today, over issues facing the new free school transport scheme.

Minister Norma Foley will take questions from TDs and Senators as many parents report not being able to access bus places for their children.

The scheme was introduced in an effort to help families cope with the rising cost of living, but the number of places available has been outstripped by demand.

Labour Party Education Spokesperson, Aodhan O’Riordan, says although the scheme is welcome, it was poorly implemented.

"The issue now is that we have quite a number of people who have always gotten tickets for their children who are not in possession of those tickets this year.

"A huge number of people applied to the scheme this year who wouldn't have done so otherwise, I've heard of cases of families who just applied for the scheme because it was free, and don't intend to use the ticket or may just use it in an emergency situation, so it hasn't worked."
