Dentists are calling on the government to stop plans that could see children's care diverted to the private sector.
The Irish Dental Association says private practices are badly understaffed, and would find it very difficult to deliver a service for young children.
It says these plans would disproportionately affect families with lower incomes.
The association says a better solution would be to address the recruitment and retention crisis across both the public and private systems.
