Defence Forces 'not fit for purpose' says RACO

It's claimed the Defence Forces is not fit-for-purpose.

The Representative Association of Commissioned Officers is calling for reform.

RACO claims urgent action is needed to re-build a depleted Defence Forces.

It still needs to be convinced there's a meaningful commitment to reform, reinvigorate and restore the army.

It will make an urgent appeal to the Defence Minister Simon Coveney tomorrow, when he addresses its Annual Delegate Conference in Co. Kildare.

General Secretary, Lt Col Conor King says Defence Forces strength is at an all-time low, but there are solutions available, if the political will exists.

He says there's a failure in policy with significant problems with conditions, like a total lack of respect for the working time of members, a failure to staff operational units, and inferior career progression and pension arrangements, that have been ignored
