Today's return of the Dáil will be dominated by statements on ending violence against women.

Sinn Féin has brought the motion in the wake of the murder of Ashling Murphy in Co. Offaly.

TD's will also debate legislation to allow adopted people access their birth records.

Covid-19 restrictions and the Department of Foreign Affairs champagne party will also likely feature.

Sinn Féin TD Louise O'Reilly says the issue of violence against women cannot be ignored.

"Now is an opportunity not just for women and men in the Oireachtas to share their own personal stories and to talk about their own personal experiences, but the Sinn Fein motion actually puts practical steps, and I'm very hopeful that the Government will not oppose our motion but actually support it today."

Meanwhile a man in his 30s remains in Garda custody this morning over the murder of Ashling Murphy.

He was arrested at St. James' Hospital in Dublin yesterday, where he was being treated for for self-inflicted wounds and other injuries.

He was taken to Tullamore Garda Station, where he could be held for 24 hours.

His period of detention's due to expire later today.
