Minister Simon Coveney survived a confidence motion in the Dáil last night, however the coalition is down a member.

TD Marc MacSharry resigned the Fianna Fáil whip and voted against the Government.

But the support of a number of Independent TDs saw Minister Coveney win the motion 92 votes to 59.

During last night's debate he criticised Sinn Féin for pushing a confidence motion in the first place.

"This is a political tactic to try and extend a political controversy, and to reinforce a false narrative of cronyism to damage relations in this government.

"Sinn Féin are doing what they do so often, north and south, stoking tension with an exaggerated narrative in an effort to create anger, resentment and division."
