Minister Simon Coveney is expected to survive a no confidence motion in the Dail this evening over his handling of the Katherine Zappone controversy.

His government coalition colleagues in Fianna Fail and the Green Party have indicated they'll be backing the under-fire Foreign Affairs Minister.

Minister Coveney's proposed appointment of former minister Katherine Zappone to a newly created UN role has been labelled cronyism and a cover up by opposition TD's.

Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty says his party's motion today is not just a publicity stunt.

"They have been exposed in the form of Minister Coveney, creating a 'makey-up' job for a friend of his who has lobbied in relation to that job.

"That job is paid out of the public purse, and gives huge access to his former cabinet colleague to the corridors of power in relation to the UN.

"Not only that, then we had a situation when the Minister was caught red handed in relation to this cronyism he then, in my view, tried to cover his tracks."
