The Irish obsession with using fake tan is reinforcing racism and self-hate.
Ireland has the highest per-capita use of tanning products in the world.
However according to one columnist it raises questions of self-esteem and cultural appropriation.
Joy Tendai Kengere (Pron. Ten-da Ken-gare-eh) says all skin colours need to be loved and appreciated.
The Irish Independent columnist says young Irish girls are learning that they're not good enough without a tan.
"Self-hate because we have young girls here, young Irish girls at 13, not appreciating how a person appears naturally is beautiful. I don't care in terms of how people want to present themselves, I'm just saying if we're going to say dark skin is beautiful, let it be across the board".
