Students in disadvantaged schools, which aren't offering higher level subjects, should be given special access to classes from other schools, according to the Children's Ombudsman.

41 DEIS schools across the country do not offer higher level Irish as a subject, the Oireachtas Education Committee has been told.

This means a student attending one of these schools would be unable to become a primary school teacher or study certain college courses.

Children's Ombudsman Niall Muldoon says digital learning could be the answer:

"We would see an opportunity for classes to be live streamed to those students in those classes that you're talking about and schools you're talking about. Can we partner up the big schools that are doing live stream? You don't need any extra staff for it, you need a child, that one child that wants to power through can sit in a classroom, watch the class in Dublin or wherever it might be, and learn from it."
