Children born through surrogacy will now be able to have their Irish parents registered on their birth certificate.

Cabinet has approved the drafting of a number of amendments to legislation around international surrogacy.

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy was set up in January and made a total of 32 recommendations.

Those recommendations went before Cabinet this morning and were approved.

Until now Irish law stated that a father of a child born through surrogacy can apply for a declaration of parentage.

The mother however, because she is not the birth mother of the child, is not entitled to apply for the same declaration.

That's going to change, and parents of existing children born under current rules will also be recognised as the child's parents.
