Guaranteed Universal Basic Income or UBI would save Ireland billions in the long run if implemented.
That's one of the main findings in a study published today by the Economic and social Research institute.
It says UBI would end means testing, encourage marginalised people to take up work and would improve health outcomes.
Dr. Paul Redmond of the ESRI says however the introduction of Universal Basic Income would require huge changes in our tax law.
"You would replace some existing social welfare payments you could increase stamp duty have a land value tax as well as replacing the lower rate of tax of 20% with a higher rate of tax 40%.
"But regardless of the funding mechanism, given its cost, it would require very substantial changes to our current system of tax and welfare."
