Hard pressed home owners are set to see their fuel bills reduced when cabinet signs off on a number of measure aimed at cutting the cost of fuel.

This morning's package will see a cut to the VAT charged on electricity and gas down to 9% - though not on petrol, diesel and home heating oil.

A triple week payment of the fuel allowance will be paid, and the PSO levy on gas and electricity is expected to be scrapped.

Age Action has welcomed the proposed initiatives but said a more targeted approach is required to ensure those most in need are helped.

Policy Specialists with the organisation Natt O'Connor says there are many older persons who do not receive a fuel allowance

"Well, it's certainly very welcomed that the government is going to extend fuel allowance. And it's very important for the third of older persons that receive that payment.

"But we would be concerned that there's many older persons on low incomes who don't receive fuel allowance. And so we've called for an additional payment and energy guarantee to reach those people who are currently not reached by any of the state's supports."
