The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland is to conduct a ballot of members on potential industrial action over pay.
The ballot will take place next month.
The union says the ballot will form part of a coordinated campaign by public sector unions, in the context of continuous high inflation, and the failure of Government to make a sustainable offer at Workplace Relations Commission discussions.
