The union says investment and recruitment are key to ensuring a safe reopening of schools in September.

It says the safety and wellbeing of students and educators must also be prioritised.

The new President of the ASTI, Eamon Dennehy, is calling for an end to pay inequality:

"Well, it it has to be tackled. The rationale behind that, I don't understand. I don't think anybody properly understands. It's a form of discrimination against younger teachers, and it really can't stand anymore. It has to be stopped because it's unfair to the teachers individually. And apart from that, it's doing untold damage to the education system as well."
