A number of jeeps were rammed during violent scenes in a town in Limerick, prompting a heavy Garda presence.

Armed officers were brought in and part of Rathkeale was sealed off after a reported stand-off between rival gangs yesterday afternoon.

It's believed machetes were produced during the incident.

Local TD and Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Niall Collins, says footage circulating online showed people fleeing the scene in balaclavas.

"About 6 large SUVs completely rammed, scattered in all directions, debris from cars scattered along a long stretch of the road in Boherbue, which is upon the entrance to the town of Ratkeale, a machete was certainly visible."
