In a statement, Gardaí said officers are are at the scene of a serious incident across from the Garden of Remembrance.

They said they are being assisted by other members of the emergency services.

They have confirmed that a total of five people have been taken to different Dublin hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

One young girl has suffered serious injuries, while a man is being treated for less serious injuries.

Gardai are in contact with the parents of the three injured children.

The Justice Minister Helen McEntee has issued a statement expressing her "deep shock" by the "appalling attack" on three innocent children and a woman in Dublin today.

The Minister says that all our thoughts are with those injured, especially with the children, their parents and families, during this extremely difficult period.

Minister McEntee says she has been briefed by the Garda Commissioner and it is her understanding that Gardaí are following a definite line of inquiry and are not looking for any other person at this time.

Her statement concludes that the attack has shocked everyone, and she adds that she has no doubt that the person responsible will be brought to justice.
