A survey of motorists has found that 80% of Irish people would rely less on their own vehicles if public transport was improved.
The AA polled over 4,200 drivers across the country with 87% saying there is a "huge difference" between the transport options available in rural and urban areas.
Of those surveyed, 9% said they only have access to public transport in a rural area if they drive there in a car first, while 6% said the transport that is there is unreliable.
When asked about the biggest issues for public transport, 40% said infrastructure had to be improved while 30% said cheaper fares should be introduced.
