A 28 year old man who accidentally shot dead his sister in Dublin earlier this year has been handed a 2 year prison sentence.

Derek Boyd, of Collins Place, Finglas, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his sister Sandra, as well as two firearms charges.

34 year old mother of 5 Sandra Boyd died when a gun was accidentally discharged by her brother Derek on March 19th of this year.

Their mother Theresa and sister Melissa had previously pleaded with Judge Pauline Codd to show leniency in a sentencing hearing last month.

In her judgement, Judge Codd said Mr Boyd was clearly remorseful for what happened, and that he'd live with that guilt for the rest of his life.

She added that while it was a 'tragic, serious and unusual' case, Mr Boyd was in possession of a firearm that he didn't know how to use, and which posed a serious safety risk.

Mr Boyd was sentenced to four years for the manslaughter of Sandra, with the final two years suspended.

He was also handed a five year term for two firearms offences, of which the last three will be suspended.

Both sentences will run concurrently.
