16 sheep have been killed in a horrific dog attack on a farm in the Wicklow Mountains.

The incident occurred when two dogs escaped from a nearby home and got onto the farm where they savagely maimed the three breeding ewes and 13 lambs.

The owner of the dog has taken responsibility, but the Irish Farmers' Association are pleading dog owners to be wary of their pets around other animals.

Daniel Dowling, the owner of the farm, says there are serious financial consequences following this attack:

"So a breeding ewe is anywhere between €250 to €270 euros. Maybe your lambs are anywhere between €130 €170. We put them in lamb in October, they give birth in March. After they lamb, then you have to vaccinate the lambs, you pump money into them, like minerals, feeding, stuff like that. So you're looking after them for maybe nine or ten months. And then, for something like that to happen then is a destroying, really, you know."
