One in four adults have drank to binge levels in the past month.

This equates to 6 units, or 3 pints of beer in one sitting.

Drinkaware's Annual Barometer survey, also shows only 3% know the low-risk amount of alcohol units recommended across one week.

The HSE's guidelines are up to 11 units per week for a woman, and up to 17 units for a man.

Chairman of Alcohol Action Ireland, Professor Frank Murray, says binge drinking is too common in Ireland:

"The finding of one in four drinkers survey is not a surprise at all. In many ways this relates to the fact that Irish adults are really very poor at identifying what the low risk weekly guidelines are. In fact, in the drink of our survey today, only one in 30 Irish adults could correctly identify the Irish low risk weekly guidelines which is quite a shocking indictment really of our state of knowledge."
