Streaming platform Netflix have announced the cost of their subscription is set to increase.

The change in price will apply to both new and existing users. The monthly fees will go up to €8.99 and €14.99 for the basic and standard plan respectively while premium accounts will go from €17 to €20.99.

These new prices will come into effect immediately for new customers while existing subscriptions will be given 30 days notice by email of the change depending on their billing cycle.

Netflix have said the price hike will help them to "continue investing in best in class productions" and "offer a wide variety of curated quality shows and films" to customers.

A spokesperson for the company said, "We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership.

"Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue, and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry.

"We offer a range of plans so members can choose a price that works best for them."
