Locals in East Cork are expressing concern for their properties as up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall between now and tomorrow morning

A Level One Flood response plan has been activated with council crews on the ground and pumps available in known flooding locations

Spot flooding is expected on the city's low lying quays and in the usual areas to the west of the city in Blarney and Ballincollig

The expected 50mm of rainfall on already saturated ground will lead to some rivers bursting their banks

Cork County Council Engineer Padraig Barrett says they will be closely monitoring high tide which is due around 1am

"We've made sandbags  available to the public and we have put sandbags in locations where we know there will be issues. We have activated our pumps where we know that water pumping will be required, but there will be staff on the ground for the next twenty four hours. High tide tonight, around 1am or 1.30am is another issue, we will be watching to ensure that the water  that's after falling during the day can get out and we will over pump where necessary"
