A UK government bill to override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol will continue its path through the House of Commons today.

That's despite question marks surrounding who'll lead the next UK government.

Voting in the first round of the race to be the next British Prime Minister also begins today, with eight candidates vying for the top job.

Fine Gael spokesperson for European Affairs, Neale Richmond, believes there's one standout candidate.

"I think it's hard to look past Rishi Sunak at this stage, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

"He has the most amount of pledged support from MPs.

"Certainly when it comes to things like the protocol, issues over legacy and other things, not many of them have a very favourable position.

"What it does present is an opportunity for a reset, and hopefully any of them will come in slightly more serious about their obligations to the Good Friday Agreement and the withdrawal agreement than their predecessor"
