A date for the retrial in the Jason Corbett murder case in the US, is due to be set today.

Molly and Thomas Martens are expected to go on trial next year, in relation to the Irishman's death.

Limerick man Jason Corbett was beaten to death at his home in North Carolina by his wife, Molly, and his father-in-law, Thomas Martens, in August 2015.

Both claim they were acting in self-defence, but a jury convicted them of second degree murder in 2017.

The North Carolina Supreme Court overturned the verdict last year and the pair were released.

However, a retrial is to be heard.

A date for it is due to be set today in Davidson Superior Court in North Carolina.

Michael Hewlett is legal affairs reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal - he thinks the trial is several months away.

"UP until now there have not been any retrial motions filed, which is what you would expect.

"Gary Frank, the elected DA, has expressed hope that a new trial could be set for this year.

"However my guess is that there won't be a trial until some time next year."

Molly and Thomas Martens have been living in the US since they were freed from prison last year.
