The adoption of a fifth round of sanctions against Russia is set to top the agenda at a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg today.

The latest sanctions were agreed following the atrocities committed by Russian armed forces in Bucha.

The sanctions include a ban on the purchase, import or transfer of coal and other solid fossil fuels into the EU from Russia.

Imports of coal into the EU from Russia are currently worth 8 billion Euro per year.

Fine Gaels spokesperson on European Affairs Neale Richmond says the current round of sanction must be implemented immediately.

"We've seen five rounds of sanctions so far each time they've increased, not incrementally, but quite massively.

"However, there is a serious demand and a number of member states and I would join that call for additional sanctions, and also to immediately end the import of coal, oil and gas from Russia into the European Union.

"This will be again discussed today at the Foreign Affairs Council."
