EU leaders have reached an agreement to ban Russian oil imports.

It follows a meeting in Brussels last night.

The European Council President announced late last night that EU leaders agreed on a Russian oil embargo.

Charles Michel said the ban would immediately cover more than two thirds of oil imports from Russia.

He said the move would cut a huge source of financing for its war machine and put maximum pressure on Moscow to end the war.

The ban was initially proposed a month ago as part of a sixth round of EU sanctions.

However there had been strong opposition from the likes of Hungary who rely heavily on the product.

Further sanctions were also agreed at the meeting last night.

Russia's largest bank's being targetted, as well as three state-owned broadcasters.
