Austria's chancellor says he's had "very direct, open and tough" talks with Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine.

It was the first face-to-face meeting Russia's president's had with a western leader since the invasion.

Karl Nehammer says his "most important message" to Mr Putin was that the conflict "must end".

He's previously called for an investigation of war crimes.

The EU's former Ambassador to Russia, Vygaudas Usackas says it wouldn't have been the best time to bring that up though:

"Frankly, if you are conducting diplomatic outreach, you try not to alienate entirely your counterpart and, probably mean avoid escalatory statements."
