The INMO is welcoming a new pilot scheme at the Mercy University Hospital where Gardaí will be rostered to protect staff.
35 Cork healthcare workers have been forced to take leave due to assaults in the past two years.
Speaking to RedFM News, Liam Conway from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says hospital staff should never be subject to abuse while at work:
"Well it's a vitally important initiative and something the INMO welcomes. It's obviously in response to a national issue, but a local issue as well where we see close to 12 nurses or midwives assaulted a day in the HSE. Be it verbally, physically or sexually."
