There's a call on Irish people to reduce their global climate impact.

The ESRI will hold a conference today on what Ireland's consumption patterns mean for global emissions.

Coinciding with the 'Black Friday' sales, it recommends bringing in a green VAT to tackle the issue.

ESRI Senior Research Officer, Dr Kelly de Bruin says buying goods from other countries creates emissions:

"The point of the conference today is to highlight the emissions that we create in other countries by our consumption of goods that we've imported. ... To kind of highlight, not only the emissions that were created in Ireland, but also the ones that we create abroad".
