It's concerned over the number of patients on hospital trolleys, with over 2,100 since Monday - 61 of those patients are being treated on trolleys at Cork hospitals

The INMO has described the number as unacceptable and says the directive to curtail non-essential activity should continue until the start of February.

Speaking to RedFM News the INMO's Cork representative Liam Conway says additional services need to be added to help ease hospital overcrowding:

"So it's not just increasing beds you must ensure that the services are available in terms of diagnostics and you also have to ensure that the services are available in the community as well because the point of care cannot just continue to be the Emergency Department."
