Everyone wants to see schools remaining open in a safe manner but extra Covid supports are needed for that to be realised.

That's according to Carl O'Brien, principal of North Monastery Primary School who is supporting a call from the INTO union for more supports to be given in the form of substitute teachers, the retention of sanitisation funding and schools supported if children need to be sent home due to Covid 19.

Teachers are concerned amid rising case numbers and the INTO is asking for a pilot scheme on antigen testing to be rolled out along with an urgent review of the age restriction on the use of face
coverings.

Carl O'Brien told RedFM News that the safety of children in our schools is paramount.

"If there's anything that could make children and families safe at this point we should be looking at it.

"If it's deemed necessary by the medical authorities we would do everything we can to support that.

"When you look at safety for children in any area of life, you'll always say there's never too much you can do.

"Anything we can do to safeguard kids, including looking at face coverings etc, I know these issues are problematic for younger kids, but we need to look at everything now at the moment."
