Government and Senior Public Health Officials will meet today to discuss the threat posed by the Omicron variant.

The possibility of broadening testing rules for passengers arriving into the country is being examined.

Passengers may be required to have a pre-departure PCR test, regardless of vaccination status, according to the Irish Times.

Professor of Immunovirology at UCC, Liam Fanning, doesn't believe more restrictions are needed.

"I don't believe we need more restrictions.

"We saw what it was like yesterday, queues outside vaccine centres to get boosters.

"I would like to see that rolled out faster, I would like to see the time the time detraction for when you can get your  third short shortened, the Johnson and Johnson certainly down to two months, that might need three shots ultimately.

"I don't think we need more restrictions, not at the moment."
