A protest calling on the government to support vaccine equity is taking place outside the Dail later.

The People's Vaccine Alliance, made up of charities like Oxfam and Amnesty International, want it to support an intellectual property rights waiver so developing countries can get better access to Covid vaccines.

CEO of Oxfam Ireland, Jim Clarken, says widespread vaccination would benefit everyone.

"Ireland and the EU are resisting what is known as the Trips Waiver, which is a waiver of the intellectual property rights at the World Trade Organisation that would allow generic companies across the world to produce vaccines.

"We need to scale up global vaccine production rapidly to the level that everybody can be vaccinated quickly.

"As it stands just 8% of people in lower income countries will have their first vaccination by the end of the year.

"This is unacceptable, but it's also creating a threat to the rest of the world."
