ASTI Wants Education Minister To Discuss Implications Of New Covid Strain With Officials

The union has written to Minister Norma Foley, to consider the issue with NPHET, prior to the reopening of schools in January.

ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie says the strain of Covid that has emerged in the UK raises some key issues:

"This raises obvious and important questions that need to be addressed. Because it's alleged that this is a much more transmissible variant, and that unlike what we've been considering to be the case previously, whereby children weren't considered to be likely to be substantial spreaders of it, that question now appears to become an open question."
