A 24 year-old woman who died after she took part in the Cork City Marathon will be laid to rest this afternoon.

The family of Ellen Cassidy have asked her friends to wear bright colours and bring a flower to her mass in Blackpool.

Ellen collapsed at the finish line of the half marathon on Patrick Street on Sunday, she was rushed to Cork University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

She was a graduate of UCC and had been on the Mardyke Arena Emerging Talent programme and represented Ireland in swimming at the international schools level.

Her heartbroken family have asked her friends to wear "their most colourful outfit" to her funeral and bring a flower if they wish to do so.

Ellen's requiem mass will take place in the Church of the Annunciation, Blackpool followed by her burial at St Catherine’s Cemetery, in Kilcully.
