The West Cork Garda Division recorded the highest number of road deaths in the country last year.

18 people lost their lives on roads in the city and county in 2022.

Figures from the Road Safety Authority show Cork and Dublin had the worst road fatalities in the country last year.

While 18 people lost their lives on Cork roads in 2022, the RSA's provisional figures show that number was revised down to 13.

Revisions are made when it has been proved that the person who died suffered a medical episode while driving, and died as a result of that, rather than from the resulting collision.

The meeting heard that the road fatalities recorded on the roads of Cork County were the second worst in over 10 years.

West Cork had the highest number of fatalities in the country last year, with the Cork West Garda Division recording 11 deaths.

Overall, the road death figures for last year are 13% higher than the year before, with 155 people losing their lives in total.

The RSA have described the overall road death figures as a stark reminder that road users must accept greater responsibility when using the road.
