The Mercy University Hospital had the second worst wait times in the country at 24.1 hours, while the wait time at Cork University hospital was 18.5 hours, making it the fourth worst.

New figures from the HSE show the average patient waited nearly 13 hours before being admitted to hospital in the first quarter of this year, up from 11.2 hours before the pandemic.

CEO of the Irish Patients Association Stephen McMahon says delays to care costs lives:

"The figures that have been reported are absolutely shocking and from the point of view that there is evidence to support the fact that 1 in 80 admissions that have been waiting more than five or six hours for admission can actually result in a preventable fatality."
